CMS Business School, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) conducted a guest lecture on “Risk Management in Banks”, as part of the Finance Interest Group (FIG) activity, an initiative across all finance courses by finance domain of CMS Business School on March 17, 2021. The program’s objective was to help participants understand the significance and role of risk management in the banking sector. The coordinators for the session were Dr. Preetha Chandran, Area Chair and Associate Professor - Finance at CMS Business School, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) and Dr. V.Y. John, Assistant Professor - Finance at CMS Business School, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University). The session was attended by 17 students of the finance domain.
The guest speaker for the session was Mr. K.L.S.N. Rao, Principal - Southern India Banks’ Staff Training College (SIBSTC), Bangalore, and Visiting Professor - IIM Bangalore. Mr. Rao is a seasoned banker with 31 years of experience in Canara Bank as a top managerial cadre in the areas like high-value corporate lending, project and infrastructure lending, credit policy, risk management, implementation of the Basel guidelines, international business, asset and liability management, and many others.
During his address to the students, Dr. Rao provided an insight into risk management in the banking industry. He explained how a successful model of the risk management practices in the banking sector can manage an institution's exposure to risk or losses and secure the value of its assets. He also shared an overview of the history and evolution of risk management in banks at the national and global levels. He spoke about the history of banking development with an exclusive focus on the grounds that laid the foundation for risk management and provided an insight into credit risk management. He emphasized the need to develop sound risk mitigation tools after identifying, evaluating, and measuring prominent risks. He particularly mentioned the significance to understand, analyze and communicate global, economic, legal, and ethical aspects of the banking business.
