CMS Business School had the honour of hosting Shri. Jairam Ramesh, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, on 27th April 2023. The event was organised to interact with its students on Rights-based Framework: An Equitable Approach to India’s Socio-economic Prosperity. The event was attended by Dr. Dinesh Nilkant, Director of CMS Business School, Prof. Ramesh G, Director of Niti School of Public Policy and Leadership, Dr. Harold Andrew Patrick, Dean of CMS Business School, other faculty members, and students. The programme was compered by Dr. Harold Andrew Patrick and was led by the faculty members in charge, Dr. Salma Begum, Dr. Shalinin Acharya, Dr. Xavier V K, Dr. Shakeela Banu C, and Dr. Uma C Swadimath.
Shri. Jairam Ramesh addressed the students about various acts that have been passed in the country, such as the Right to Information Act in 2005, the Forest Rights Act in 2006, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) Act in 2005, the Right to Education in 2009, National Food Security Act in 2013, and Land Acquisition Act in 2013, and the New Education Policy (NEP). He emphasised the importance of making the government more accountable and effective. He said, "Governance should be assessed through performance, and the focus should be on delivery that relates to the promises made by the Government." He further highlighted the need for citizens to be aware of their legal rights, and the greater sanctity of the laws passed by parliament. Shri. Jairam Ramesh also spoke about Rajasthan being the first state in India to pass a bill on health rights and the state's universal health insurance scheme. He discussed the right to health, referring to the protection of life and making healthcare accessible and affordable to the people.
During the event, the students had an opportunity to interact with Shri. Jairam Ramesh during a question-answer session, moderated by Dr. Shalini Acharya. He answered questions on India's approach to the global geo-economic and geo-political crisis, healthcare, measures to help MSMEs, and India's exports to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was concluded with a Vote of Thanks by the Dean of CMS Business School, Dr. Harold Andrew Patrick. The event was a great success, and the students appreciated the opportunity to learn from Shri. Jairam Ramesh's insights into India's socio-economic and political issues.
