Reimagining Libraries in the Digital Age: National Conference Explores Smart Technologies and Research Innovation

11 Mar 2023

The Learning Resource Centre of JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), in association with the Karnataka State College Librarians Association (KSCLA), hosted a two-day National Conference on “Smart Libraries” on 10th to 11th March 2023 at CMS Business School, Bengaluru. The conference brought together academicians, librarians, researchers, and students from across India to explore the evolving role of libraries in a technology-driven academic ecosystem.

Centred on the growing integration of digital tools and intelligent systems, the conference examined how libraries are transforming into dynamic knowledge hubs. Inaugurating the event, Shri Basavaraj S. Horatti, Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, highlighted the importance of innovation in library services and underscored the evolving role of librarians as educators and facilitators of knowledge. Senior university leadership echoed these views, emphasising the shift from traditional systems to technology-enabled learning environments.

Across two days, the programme unfolded through a series of keynote addresses, thematic sessions, and research presentations. Prof. Sanjay Kataria, University Librarian at Bennett University, delivered the keynote, drawing attention to the growing relevance of mobile technologies and digital access in modern libraries. Sessions explored a wide spectrum of themes, including theory and practice of smart libraries, RFID-enabled systems, research data management, open access frameworks, and the role of social media in enhancing user engagement.

Participants were introduced to emerging tools such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and automation in library operations, alongside discussions on experimental and collaborative learning spaces. Real-world applications ranging from robotic book retrieval systems to maker spaces and digital repositories provided insight into how institutions are redefining access to knowledge.

The conference witnessed participation from 167 delegates and featured contributions from leading experts across the country. With 40 research papers presented, discussions reflected both current challenges and future opportunities in library science.

By fostering dialogue on innovation, accessibility, and research support, the conference reinforced the critical role of smart libraries in advancing academic excellence and preparing institutions for an increasingly digital future.
