Moot Court Competition Enhances Legal Reasoning Skills Among MBA Students at JAIN (Deemed-to-be University)

20 Nov 2025

Bengaluru: The General Management and Innovation Club (GMIC) of JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), CMS Business School, conducted a Moot Court Competition on 11 November 2025 at Seminar Hall 4, FMS–CMS, Bengaluru. Designed for Semester III students of the MBA 2024–26 cohort, the event brought together emerging business leaders for an immersive learning experience in legal reasoning and structured argumentation.

The two-hour competition introduced students to the dynamics of a simulated courtroom, focusing on real-world Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) case studies. With 30 participants and six competing teams, the initiative aimed to deepen students’ understanding of contemporary legal challenges relevant to business environments. Faculty Coordinators Dr Shakeela Banu C and Dr Uma Swadimath led the event, with Ms Shruthi supporting key logistical components, including attendance and documentation.

The session opened with a welcome address by Dr Manjunath, who emphasised the value of legal literacy for managerial decision-making. This was followed by an overview of competition rules by Dr M. K. Lodi, who later served as adjudicator. Teams were assigned IPR cases through a randomised chit-based selection and were divided into plaintiff and defendant groups. Participants were assessed on clarity of arguments, analytical depth, communication skills, teamwork, and understanding of legal frameworks.

Reflecting on the event, Dr Shakeela Banu C remarked, “The Moot Court is more than an academic exercise; it is an opportunity for students to experience the intersections of law, strategy, and leadership. Such platforms prepare them for real business challenges where sound reasoning and structured communication are essential.”

The event concluded with the announcement of the winning and runner-up teams, followed by a Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms Ishita, who acknowledged the dedication of the participants and faculty members. The competition successfully achieved its objectives of fostering critical thinking, collaborative leadership, and effective communication among students.

The initiative underscores the institution’s commitment to experiential learning and will remain a cornerstone of the MBA programme’s academic calendar.
